The Old Grove Farm
Mark had been on the move as a film editor and director
through Europe for the previous 18 years and was thinking of moving back
to England and especially the countryside he loved. Looking at the old
rambling farm buildings with their unique ‘soldier bricking’
and flint wall panels he came up with the idea of being able to realise
the dream of living in it by converting the extra living and working areas
into secluded romantic retreats for others to enjoy.
Using all the original features and reclaiming much of the
original materials over the next 5 years, the 6 very individual and totally
self-contained cottages were created from their earlier origins as a Farm
workers cottage, Bakery, Winnowing Barn, Animal and Stabling Barns and
Dairy’s.
The layout of the ‘soft red’ brick buildings
in a figure of eight around 2 joined quadrangles greatly aided the sense
of privacy that Mark was so keen to keep for his guests, as one of the
main attractions of the cottages is their location in such a quiet rural
location, with black night sky’s and a closeness to nature that
belies their nearness to London.
The Grove cottages became a big favourite with guests who
wanted to ‘get away from it all’ and stay in a relaxed atmosphere
where their sense of taste would not be assaulted with suburban B&B
styling.
Now Mark has added a few other local cottages to offer his
guests, that although not belonging to him they fit in with his ideas
of what Rural Romance is all about.
Future developments at The Grove will further enhance this
peaceful rural haven, as a large wildlife area with a very enlarged pond
and ‘another’ orchard is established.
The unique interiors and original furniture of the cottages
along with the open fires and Old Persian rugs give a special relaxed
feeling of coming home to your own ‘loved’ and ‘lived
in’ cottage in the countryside. All helped of course by Maxi the
lovely black cottage cat.
The following cottages in themselves make up the old Grove
Farm: Snow Cottage, Rose Cottage, The Bakery, Gun Cottage, Dons Barn and
Orchard Cottage.
There are bikes for the free use of guests and lots of local
information and maps all marked out with the best walks and lovely local
pubs, you can even hire a canoe from Mark to explore Constables River
Stour.
The Grove Cottages have a 4 Star rating from the tourist
Board and are designed as walk in homes, complete with everything you
could need including a generous complimentary breakfast basket so you
don’t have to waste time shopping.
The old Grove farm is very ecologically minded and has it’s
own waste water purification plant and uses only ecological cleaning agents,
all rubbish is re-cycled as far as local policies allow and Mark is keen
to enhance the local wildlife and flora through his wildflower meadows,
Orchards, Bee keeping, Bantams, Ducks, Hedgerow planting, Pond creating
and wildlife Sanctuary’s
